Mi Corazón (Augie) has always said I am artistic. I have always disagreed and told him, “I am a good imitator of most things I see.”Throughout, my most recent trip to Mexico, I noticed everything either had Frida, Día de Los Muertos, La Catrina, Corona y Tequila logos on them.I found Frida dresses, scarves, eye glass cases, lipstick cases, umbrellas, purses, wallets, tequila shot glasses, book covers and every type of jewelry. Frida was on everything imaginable. Don’t misunderstand me I love Frida, but this is overkill! Come on Gente. I also saw a few Che, Pancho Villa and Benito Juarez motifs imprinted on everything imaginable, you name it, it had an imprinted image. I saw nacimientos (nativities) in Dia de Los Muertos images of calaveras, which were offensive and seemed blasphemous to Mi Corazon and I. They were also incongruent to my brain! My brain was short circuiting. We just walked away, No, Thank you. These are not for me. There are a multitude of other positive images of Mexico I would prefer to see promoting the beauty; the pyramids, el rebozo, birrote t-shirts, maize, Los Mariachi’s figurines and positive men and women role models (they do exist, right)? It’s not just about the tequila! There is so much beauty and positive images to promote and imitate from Mexico. Don’t ruin it, or perhaps it’s too late.
